shoot streams without over exposure
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:25:18 PM »
I want to shoot a photo of stream of silky-water look. But in a bright sunny day, if I have a slow shutter speed, the photo is always over exposed. How can I resolve this problem?

If it's a gray, cloudy, rainy day, it will be best for shooting streams because the weather makes the scene much darker, which lets you use long shutter speeds to create a wonderful silky-water effect. Try shooting in aperture priority mode and set f-stop to f/22 (or a higher number if your lens has it). With this, f/22 will leave you shutter open long enough to give you that silky-water look. If this strategy doesn't work in a bright day, try to use a Neutral Density (ND) filter to expend the exposure time to create the same result. Give a try and let us know the result!

I second the tip on the ND filter. They come in different stops though, so choose the right one.

Or if you have a nice budget, check out the Singh-Ray Vari-NDhttp://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html
